Detailed Account

On 28 May 2025, Cambodian military units stationed along the Cambodia–Thailand border reported that Thai military forces fired explosive ordnance from outside Cambodian territory, resulting in an explosion within Cambodian sovereign land. At the time of the incident, Cambodian forces were conducting routine defensive duties in accordance with their mandate to protect national sovereignty.

The explosion caused the death of Major Soun Rown, a soldier of the 5th General Brigade, Small Regiment No. 395, under the 9th Intervention Brigade, 3rd Intervention Brigade of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces. He was killed while performing his duty in defense of the nation.

Cambodian forces did not initiate hostilities. The incident was described by Cambodian authorities as an unprovoked act of aggression and a serious breach of border agreements and international law.

On behalf of the sergeants, non-commissioned officers, and soldiers of the Cambodian Army, we express our deepest condolences to Mrs. M. Hap and her family for their immeasurable loss. Major Soun Rowan’s sacrifice reflects the courage and dedication of Cambodian soldiers who stand at the frontline to protect peace and sovereignty.

The Royal Government of Cambodia strongly condemns this act and reiterates its commitment to resolving border disputes through peaceful, legal, and diplomatic means, while firmly upholding the right to defend Cambodian territory.
